The Stefanie Powers Affair

"Stefanie Powers was a sight for sore eyes. Her beauty mesmerized viewers. And she had a good chance to show her talents, dancing very well in various styles. But her character was poorly designed. April Dancer was in some way a pioneer woman, as a heroine in an espionage series. She paved the way for strong characters such as Sydney Bristow (in the Alias series) and Carrie Matheson (Homeland). But unlike her successors, April was made to be fragile and halfway coward. When things got tough she often hid away and waited for help from partner Slate. One of her inspirations seems to have been the heroine of the classic British comics Modesty Blaise, with her partner and protector Willie Garvin. April Dancer is beautiful – but cold and distant".
