Sun-Times: 10 great movies from 2015 that may be just a tad underseen

10 great movies from 2015 that may be just a tad underseen

WRITTEN BY ROB SAMUELSON POSTED: 12/28/2015, 01:56PM

“The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” (Director Guy Ritchie; Writers: Guy Ritchie, Lionel Wigram, Jeff Kleeman, David C. Wilson; Starring: Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander, Elizabeth Debicki)

On a technical, visual level, “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” is one of the cleanest, clearest expressions of action of 2015. Each sequence is telegraphed, with easily discernable sight lines and an editing style that keeps a viewer’s eyes trained on exactly what director Guy Ritchie (“Snatch,” the “Sherlock Holmes” movies) wants. It is competence done to an extreme degree. Plus, you know, that Alicia Vikander knows how to dance. Her scene drunkenly swaying around to Solomon Burke’s “Cry to Me” is Charlie Chaplin-level physical comedy. She was already guaranteed to be a standout in my eyes based on her work in “Ex Machina” and “The Danish Girl” from this year, but this moment made her a star.

Examiner: "'Inside Out' is No. 1 movie in digital sales/rentals;'Man From U.N.C.L.E.' No. 2"

"Inside Out" was No. 1 for movie digital sales and rentals from Nov. 23 to Nov. 29, 2015, according to Rentrak. Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it's no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions: Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler), Fear (voiced by Bill Hader), Anger (voiced by Lewis Black), Disgust (voiced by Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (voiced by Phyllis Smith). "The Man From U.N.C.L.E."was No. 2. At the height of the Cold War, a mysterious criminal organization plans to use nuclear weapons and technology to upset the fragile balance of power between the United States and Soviet Union. CIA agent Napoleon Solo (played by Henry Cavill) and KGB agent Illya Kuryakin (played by Armie Hammer) are forced to put aside their hostilities and work together to stop the evildoers in their tracks. The duo's only lead is the daughter of a missing German scientist, whom they must find soon to prevent a global catastrophe. "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." got mixed reviews from critics, and the movie bombed at the box office.

Newsmax: Classic Spy Television Hits - 5 TV Shows That Had Highest Ratings

Classic Spy Television Hits: 5 TV Shows That Had Highest Ratings

By Cathy S. Reeder   |   Friday, 18 Dec 2015 04:18 PM
Spy shows have been popular since the early days of television. These shows have ranged from serious endeavors like "I Spy" to the buffoonery of "Get Smart." Most lie somewhere in between, with a mix of serious and comedic elements.

Here are some classic television spy shows that earned the highest ratings:

1. "The Man from U.N.C.L.E."
"The Man from U.N.C.L.E." was a spy/action show that ran on NBC for four seasons beginning in 1964. It featured two suave agents, Napoleon Solo (Robert Vaughn) and Illya Kuryakin (David McCallum) who fought for peace against foreign agents, especially those from THRUSH. "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." placed No. 13 in the Nielson ratings in the 1965-66 season.

2. "I Spy"
NBC's "I Spy" was a spy/adventure show that ran for three seasons beginning in 1965. Bill Cosby broke barriers as the first black leading man on an American TV show, portraying a spy, tennis coach, linguist, and Rhodes scholar. Robert Culp was his fellow spy/tennis player. "I Spy" ranked No. 29 in the Top 30 in the Nielsen ratings in the 1966-67 season.

3. "Get Smart"
"Get Smart" was a comedy about spies at a time when people were legitimately nervous about secret agents. It pitted bumbling CONTROL Agent Maxwell Smart (Don Adams) against KAOS, whose agents had little to fear. "Get Smart" ran for four seasons on NBC until it was cancelled in 1969. CBS picked the show up for it fifth and final season. "Get Smart" ranked 12th in the Nielsen ratings its first year and 22nd the next season.

4. "Mission: Impossible"
"Mission: Impossible" was a serious spy show and one of the longest running at seven seasons. A team of government spies were offered "impossible missions" (should they decide to accept them). Each spy had a specialization, from strongman to alluring lady to a master of disguise who could make masks with an incredible likeness to his prey. "Mission Impossible debuted on CBS in 1966 and ranked No. 11 in the Nielsen ratings for the 1968-69 season.

5. "The Six Million Dollar Man"
"The Six Million Dollar Man" was a spy and action/adventure TV show that ran on ABC beginning in 1974. Steve Austin, an astronaut and Air Force pilot, almost died in a crash. He was outfitted with numerous bionic body parts worth $6 million and, in return, worked for the government dealing with spies, aliens, and crazy scientists. During its five-season run, "The Six Million Dollar Man" ranked seventh, ninth, and 11th in three seasons.

UNCLE Image # 1: the Badge

The UNCLE badge was mandatory for all staff and visitors. They were delivered by beautiful hostesses. The fingers of those receptionists were soaked in a chemical substance. This formula was part of the defense: if anyone came with a fake badge, which had not been delivered personally by the receptionist... red alert in the HQ!

Kat's 5 stars review: "Must read. (...) I enjoyed this book!"

A fan's memories! November 30, 2015

Author Dagomir Marquezi brings his own memories of the 1960's spy show The Man from U.N.C.L.E. This is his first book in English. He breaks down each (105 episodes in total) episode of the four seasons (by cast, crew, acts of each episode, the affair and some interesting facts or trivia or memory of the episode. He also breaks down the eight movies The 1983 The Return of the Man from U.N.C.L.E. The Fifteen Years Later Affair and the new 2015 remake movie, and the spin-off The Girl from U.N.C.L.E (the only season with 29 episodes), Then he gives the listing of every episode, the main guest stars, writers, directors, and different places where the affairs took place. Also has a Bibliography. Must read. This book and the Cool TV of the 1960's got me into The TV series (I had to buy the first season!) Thanks! I enjoyed this book!

Mirror: "Guy Ritchie in frame as Bond director after The Man From U.N.C.L.E success"

Guy Ritchie could take over from Sam Mendes as James Bond director – after impressing 007 producers with spy flick The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Sam confirmed he expects to stand down after SPECTRE and I’m told movie bosses think Guy could bring an interesting new approach to the franchise. Insiders say execs loved U.N.C.L.E, starring Henry Cavill and based on the TV series created by Bond writer Ian Fleming.
Guy and Bond actor Daniel Craig are believed to be friends too, which could work very much in Guy’s favour .  A source said: “Guy has had a run of box office successes but it was The Man From U.N.C.L.E that really caught the Bond producers’ eye.

Evening Standard: "The Man from U.N.C.L.E - cars are the stars of this 1960s spy thriller"

Transformed: Padfield Road became Sixties East Berlin for a dramatic car chase in The Man from U.N.C.L.E., which is released on DVD next Monday

Only the most eagle-eyed will have spotted the location in the final cut, after 100 cast and crew converged on a tiny south London backstreet and transformed it into atmospheric Sixties East Berlin for a major Guy Ritchie film involving no fewer than 250 period vehicles.
By day, Padfield Road at Loughborough Junction — squeezed into a triangle locked in by two arterial roads and a network of clattering overhead railway lines — is home to motor repair businesses and a café, huddled under a row of Victorian arches.
After the set designers went to work, however, it had “moved” approximately 600 miles to the east to present a glossy, “noir” backdrop to the opening scenes of The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
It’s where German motor mechanic and missing nuclear scientist’s daughter Gaby Teller (Alicia Vikander) meets American art thief-turned-CIA operative Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill), triggering a dramatic car chase through Cold War East Berlin in a fast-paced spy thriller that races into the colourful and more glamorous world of Sixties Italy.
It’s a highly stylised, humorous re-boot of the Sixties television series of the same name and involves plenty of sophistication, beautiful settings and wardrobes full of immaculately pressed Sixties garments.
But, for many, it’s the cars that make the movie, with a star cast of vintage Ferraris, Jaguars, Mercedes and Aston Martins among the more prosaic Wartburgs, Vespas, Trabants and the occasional Peugeot and Citroën H van. But all was not as it seemed, as I discovered when I caught up with the film’s vehicle co-ordinator, Alex King, to mark the release of the film on DVD and Blu-ray on December 7.
