"Why so many blockbuster movies about saving the world? Hamlet helps provide an answer."

Image
Sir Laurence Olivier in the 1948 British film adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Hamlet", which Olivier adapted and directed September 23, 2015 05:07 EST Christopher S. Morrissey If you went out to the movies this summer, I’m betting you saw yet another movie about saving the world.  It’s such a familiar plot, it’s worth asking:   Why?  Why does this theme keep recurring? We know what most reviewers will say. Those cynics, echoing the words of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, will opine that here again is another tale of “dull revenge”. The threat of nuclear annihilation drives the plot of the stylish new film version of  The Man From U.N.C.L.E.  (“United Network Command for Law and Enforcement,” a fictional spy agency), set in 1963. Although the American spy Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and the Soviet spy Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) are Cold War enemies, they team up to defeat a nuclear threat from retrograde Nazi lunatics. This dynamic duo makes for an

David McCallum: his first book in 81 years

Image
David McCallum (Illya Kuryakin in The Man From UNCLE series) just published his first book: a novel called Once a Crooked Man . McCallum is 81 years old, still working in the NCIS series. This is from the Amazon book's site: A deliciously quirky debut crime novel from David McCallum, the beloved actor know for his portrayal of Illya Kuryakin on  The Man From U.N.C.L.E.  and Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard on NCIS . Crime pays. And pays well. Sal, Max and Enzo Bruschetti have proved this over a lifetime of nefarious activity that they have kept hidden from law enforcement. Nowhere in any file, on any computer is there a record of anything illegal from which they have profited. But Max has a problem. His body is getting old and his doctor has told him to take it easy. Max has decided that the time has come for the family to retire. But when young actor Harry Murphy overhears the Bruschetti brothers planning changes to their organization, including the murder of a ma

Costello: "'Man from U.N.C.L.E.' finds its place in year of spy movies"

"Kingsman" (early this year) was an over-the-top action thriller with comedy mixed in with regularity. The more recent "Mission Impossible: 5" was a classic stunt-driven, story-driven thriller with a couple nice elemental surprises and a tie-a-bow-on-it plot twist to close things nicely. Then there was "Man From U.N.C.L.E." Not only did this movie clearly distinguish itself enough from the rest of the spy-movie pack, but it pleasantly surprised me, even if it some of the direction choices were a little rough around the edges. It should be noted that I have no idea what the old TV show was like, so I'm not going to compare the movie to that at all. First, the good. "Man From U.N.C.L.E." jumped right into the story with a predicament involving Solo (played fantastically by Henry Cavill) and Gaby (tantalizingly played by Alicia Vikander). Solo, a secret agent, tells Gaby that her father is missing, and he wants her to help

Brock Press: "I highly recommend seeing this film"

Film Review: The Man From U.N.C.L.E. September 15, 2015  Matt Von Lukawiecki This reboot of the classic 60’s series is one of this summer’s top films. To be honest, I was a bit sceptical going into it. I’m happy to say, however, that the film did not disappoint on the trailer’s promise of a witty, comedic spy film. The plot of the movie follows two enemy spies in the 1960’s who are forced to work together on the behalf of their respective nations. Napoleon Solo (played by Henry Cavill), an American ex-thief turned CIA superspy, and Illya Kuryakin (played by Armie Hammer), a Russian KGB superspy with a short temper, are forced to work as a team to take down a mysterious criminal organization attempting to build nuclear weapons. THR: "Batman Meets 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' in December"

Image
SEPTEMBER 14, 2015   2:54pm PT by  Graeme McMillan Batman Meets 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' in December Henry Cavill  and  Armie Hammer 's big-screen reboot of  The Man From U.N.C.L.E.  might have come and gone, but Warner Bros. apparently has more plans for the 1960s property — including a team-up with another 1960s TV hero. Launching in December, DC Entertainment will be releasing a two-issue comic book series titled  Batman '66 Meets The Man From U.N.C.L.E. , described by the publisher as "a groovy, globe-spanning adventure in this one-of-a-kind miniseries." The plot may be what fans expect (and demand) — T.H.R.U.S.H., the underworld organization from  U.N.C.L.E.,  decides to get into the supervillain business and hires some of Batman's most famous foes — but the locale won't be; instead of Gotham City, the series sees the heroes "jetting off to Europe" to take care of business.
