GQ: "The Best Movies to Watch on an Airplane Right Now"

Image
The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Available on:  American Airlines Is Guy Ritchie the world’s best Airplane Movie director? Other films of his, like  King Arthur  and  Sherlock Holmes , fit the bill perfectly, but what seems to be enduring on planes right now is  The Man From U.N.C.L.E . Planes are for romps. The tiny screens lend themselves to bright colors and fun sets, not dark and dingy scenes packed with dour emotions. In  The Man From U.N.C.L.E.  you get espionage, intrigue, cocktail rings, and Armie Hammer in some really great clothes. This one is already enjoyable off a plane, but you’ll probably feel a little less guilty choosing it over everything else on a plane.— JS To read the complete story click here . Pajiba: "Movies That Need Sequels, Like NOW, Goddammit!"

Image
Movies That Need Sequels, Like NOW, Goddammit! By  Petr Knava  |  Lists  | September 12, 2018 |  The Man From U.N.C.L.E.  (2005) Look, I don’t really like this movie very much. I mean, it’s okay. It’s  fine . But y’all are  nuts  for it. And that’s fine too! So partly out of consideration for you, and partly because I think there was room for improvement in a sequel (a planned follow-up did exist at one point, with some overtures being made to its development even well after the movie bombed), I have decided to include it here. While I think the finished product was nothing special, it did seem that the central trio’s chemistry was potent and easy enough so as to lend itself well to more vintage spy hijinks. After all, this  U.N.C.L.E. literally ends with them setting up U.N.C.L.E. So let them have a go at it. Besides, don’t you just feel awful for poor Guy ‘Just Can’t Get a Franchise To Keep Going’ Ritchie? Although to be f...

The UNCLE secret message pen ad

"Here's a golden oldie from 1966: the Man from U.N.C.L.E. secret message pen ad by American Character toy company. It looks like the entire marketing campaign for the commercial cost about fifty cents, but in those days anything relating to a movie or TV spy was a sure-fire way to make a quick profit". Episode # 24 Guest: Richard Kiel

Image
Richard Dawson Kiel (September 13, 1939 – September 10, 2014) was an American actor, voice artist, and comedian, best known for his role as Jaws in the James Bondfranchise, portraying the character in The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) and Moonraker (1979); he lampooned the role with a tongue-in-cheek cameo in Inspector Gadget(1999). His next-most recognized role is the tough, but eloquent Mr. Larson in Happy Gilmore (1996). Other notable films include The Longest Yard (1974), Silver Streak(1976), Force 10 from Navarone (1978), Pale Rider (1985) and Tangled (2010). In television, Kiel portrayed the Kanamit alien in the now-classic The Twilight Zone episode "To Serve Man" (1962) and Dr. Miguelito Loveless' assistant, Voltaire, in first-season episodes of The Wild Wild West (1965-1966). Kiel was born in Detroit, Michigan. His height and features were a result of the hormonal condition of acromegaly. In his prime, Kiel was 7 ft 1 1⁄2 in (217 cm) tall. He noted in his 2...

Entertainment Weekly: "2015’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E. unquestionably the best film Guy Ritchie has ever made"

Mission: Impossible — Fallout and the redemption of Henry Cavill DARREN FRANICH July 30, 2018 at 07:05 PM EDT In Mission: Impossible — Fallout, Henry Cavill plays CIA agent August Walker. He’s paired with IMF all-star Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) for a skydiving mission. Cruise looks smaller next to Cavill, but so does everyone. Director Christopher McQuarrie cleverly films Cavill’s height like a running joke, his big, brash mustache the shape of a lesser man’s toupee. The visual treatment of Cavill reveals a deeper rift. Walker represents brute force, and the brutality of force. He always kills the bad guys, and is okay killing good guys. It’s a philosophical distinction from Hunt and his IMF kin, a chill crew of adventure heroes. They prefer old-fashioned espionage, the deep-cover character work. Walker looms, towers, hulks. You can’t imagine him pretending to be anyone but himself. Not much chance for emotional range, is what I’m getting at. My favorite Cavill performan...

Cinema Retro: "Rare Man From U.N.C.L.E. Double Feature TV Spot"

Image
Although we've seen the individual theatrical trailers for the 1966 "Man from U.N.C.L.E." feature films "To Trap a Spy" and "The Spy with My Face", we had never seen this rarity: a 60-second U.S. TV spot presenting them in the double-feature format in which most fans saw them theatrically. Amusingly, the footage crediting David McCallum (who the narrator refers to as "David McCullum") was inexplicably lifted from another "Man from U.N.C.L.E" feature film, "One Spy Too Many" and shows villain David Sheiner in the same footage! The U.N.C.L.E. feature films were simply two-part episodes that had been telecast on TV, then converted into highly profitable movies, occasionally with some re-editing and extra footage added that was deemed a bit too steamy for network broadcasts. EW: "How Henry Cavill pushed himself to match Tom Cruise's 'tirelessness' in Mission: Impossible — Fallout"

Image
How Henry Cavill pushed himself to match Tom Cruise's 'tirelessness' in Mission: Impossible — Fallout SHIRLEY LI July 27, 2018 at 11:30 AM EDT Henry Cavill nearly got to work with Tom Cruise before joining Mission: Impossible — Fallout. The two were in talks to costar in The Man From U.N.C.L.E., but Cruise dropped out to focus on producing and filming Fallout‘s predecessor, Rogue Nation. So, when Cavill got the call to join Fallout as CIA agent August Walker — a man who ends up butting heads with Cruise’s Ethan Hunt, thanks to their “different ideals about how to achieve things” — he couldn’t be more pleased to follow through after their “near-miss” years ago. “I was very excited to finally get the chance to work with Tom,” he says. “Tom remembered very precise details of our previous conversation, which I did not remember. He’s excellent at that.” To read the complete story click here. You'll find much more about UNCLE in Amazon.com -...

Henry Cavill: "I’d LOVE to be 007 next"

Image
James Bond: Henry Cavill ‘I'd say YES to replacing Daniel Craig, I’d LOVE to be 007 next’ MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 6 Fallout and Superman star Henry Cavill has revealed he would love to play James Bond 007 after Daniel Craig. By GEORGE SIMPSON PUBLISHED: 11:18, Wed, Jul 25, 2018 | UPDATED: 11:27, Wed, Jul 25, 2018 Just 22-years-old he was director Martin Campbell’s preferred choice after screen-testing but was ultimately considered too young by Bond producers. Since then Cavill has channelled something of an American Bond as Napoleon Solo in Guy Richie’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E. But now as he approaches the age Craig was when he took on the iconic part, the Brit is still adamant he would love to play 007 next. And in a recent interview for Mission: Impossible – Fallout, it sounds like all the stunt training has been good practice if he’s going to bag the role of a lifetime. Speaking with Yahoo Movies , Cavill said: “I would love to do it of course. “I think Bond would be a re...
