Report #0075: "They never had a beer together"

Image
"The Man From UNCLE series started in black and white. One of the advantages of Season One was to be produced with great care by the series' true creator, Sam Rolfe. In addition, McCallum, Vaughn and Carroll clearly showed they were having much fun with their roles. There were well defined differences between Solo and Kuryakin. They didn’t show intimacy as “buddies” but solid loyalty to each other. They saved each other’s lives time and again - but never had a beer together. The series already starts with the two acting as partners. (The events prior to the partnership would only be explored in the 2015 film). That first season had funny situations, comic characters, and a general lightness. However, there were also menacing villains and situations of violence and even torture". FIMO: "'The Man From UNCLE - Cheesiness At Its Best"

Image
The Man From UNCLE-Cheesiness At Its Best August 25, 2015 by David Tillman Yes, The Man from U.N.C.L.E . is cheesy. Yes, it’s totally a throwback to the 1960s, not just in content but in style. Yes, it’s predictable and unrealistic. And yes, if you like spy movies, you should totally go see it.  Not because it’s artful, but because it’s fun–as was the 60s TV series from which it hails. If you want a movie with style, action and a bit of comedy, director Guy Ritchie is your guy. The entire approach to this film was retro, not just to retell a spy story from the 60s, but to take the viewer back to the 60s. The coloring, the music, the split-screen cuts–all of it tips its hat deliberately to another time. It’s not a film to be taken seriously; quite the opposite, in fact. It’s a film that doesn’t take itself too seriously, which makes it endearing. To read the complete story, click here. Amazon.com - http://goo.gl/OD1XKW Amazon Australia - http://go...

Chicago Tribune: "Women of a certain age used to crush hard on ‘NCIS’ David McCallum"

Image
Women of a certain age used to crush hard on ‘NCIS’ David McCallum by Barbara Brotman, Chicago Tribune at 10:08 AM on Aug 25, 2015 Oh, let’s be honest. The opening of the movie version of “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” is all well and good. But within a certain demographic, namely mine, it is setting hearts atwitter with memories of our long-ago crushes on Illya. Illya Kuryakin, played by David McCallum, was the quiet, enigmatic Russian agent in the original series who worked with Napoleon Solo to defeat the evil empire of THRUSH. Ah, Illya, with that exotic, unplaceable accent and that air of mystery, intellect and possible tragedy; Illya, with that shining blond hair; Illya, in that black turtleneck that had us fanning ourselves with our Tiger Beat magazines. We adored him, we who were young girls in the ’60s. “I was completely obsessed,” says Alison Pohn, who grew up and play-acted “The Man from U.N.C.L.E” on the North Side of Chicago. “You could not see wall o...

Euronews: "Richie breathes life into Man from UNCLE brand"

Image
Richie breathes life into “Man from UNCLE” brand 24/08 11:45 CET Guy Richie takes on another franchisable household name, one that has been in the kitsch cupboard for a while, with “The Man from UNCLE ”. Reviving the 60s buddy fantasy of a CIA and KGB agent working together against absolute evil is a tough sell in our less-innocent age A reportedly long list of big names walked away from this project after expressing interest, so recreating the original’s charm will be a key.The dynamic duo have a host of high-profile females to deal with, in keeping with the series’ style and sex ethos.. “I think in our film it’s quite rare to see in a big franchise movie these two very, very strong female characters, and I think it’s something you’ve seen the last couple of years, with big fantasy productions that have been here which actually has single female leads. And it’s something that I think it’s changing — thank God — and I think women and men are both proven to want...

CBS: "The Long Island Affair"

Image
The Man From U.N.C.L.E. — The Long Island Affair August 24, 2015 1:24 PM Special to CBSNewYork.com By James H. Burns NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Imagine if today, George Clooney moved down the block from you, in your middle class, suburban town. Or if Brad Pitt was, out of nowhere, living next door. Because as  The Man From U.N.C.L.E. movie continues to play in local theaters around town, it is astonishing to discover that the series’: original star, Robert Vaughn (as secret agent, Napoleon Solo), at nearly the height of his fame, was not only suddenly staying in Long Island, but may have had a hand in shaping local New York history. During U.N.C.L.E.’s original successful television run (1964-1968), it was nearly as popular as the nation’s most successful rock bands. (Vaughn and co-star David McCallum (as Illya Kuryakin) were frequently featured not only in the era’s gossip tabloids, but the 1960s’  teen pop star magazines.) Both Vaughn and McCa...

Man From UNCLE - the IMDb Trivia

Image
Tom Cruise was cast as Napoleon Solo but chose to focus instead on Missão: Impossível - Nação Secreta (2015), so he dropped out. Henry Cavill, who was at first considered for the other role, was cast.  Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer often did their own stunts in the film. Hammer was more enthusiastic about his stunts; his stunt double joked that "he hardly has a chance to do anything because he's out there doing it all by himself". Napoleon Solo's trick of removing a tablecloth from a table while leaving all the objects undisturbed wasn't a visual effect - Henry Cavill actually did it, having trained in the trick from British variety star Mat Ricardo. One of the reasons the film stayed in the 60s time period was to allow them "to have our own world, our own reality, our own tone, which sets us apart" from films like Bourne and other recent spy thrillers.   When Napoleon is sitting in the truck and going through the radio stations, one st...

Yvonne Craig (1934-2015) was a Girl from UNCLE

Image
In 1966 two episodes of The Man From UNCLE  series were edited to produce the movie One of Our Spies is Missing. It was a mistake. The film was about eldery people trying to get younger in a messy plot. The producers needed some youth and sex appeal. So, they called Yvonne Craig, to film additional scenes. She was the assurance of beauty and seduction in every take. Yvonne passed away on August 17 at 78. Every newspaper remembered her as the Bat Girl. But she was a girl from UNCLE too. Report #0043: "What was the secret to enter from Del Floria's?"

Image
REPORT #0043 How large is the UNCLE building? Three floors. Details are classified. How do UNCLE people enter the building? There are four secret entrances: 1) a public garage, 2) a secret underground tunnel 3) a nightclub called Club Mask 4) Del Floria's tailor and dry cleaning shop (used by enforcement agents). What was the secret to enter from Del Floria's? The agents went in as clients. When recognized by Del Floria himself, he pressed a secret button on an ironing board. The agents then entered a cubicle, closed the curtain and pulled on one of the clothes hooks. The combination of the ironing board secret button and the hook opened a back door in the cubicle onto UNCLE's reception. What Culture: "The Man From UNCLE’s Biggest Enemy Is Itself – Why The Film Doesn’t Work"

Image
The Man From UNCLE’s Biggest Enemy Is Itself – Why The Film Doesn’t Work A reboot that that doesn’t like the original. Alex Leadbeater The big release of the past week (at least internationally) was Guy Ritchie’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Normally I’d do the usual highly opinionated review, but seeing as we had one of those last week , I thought instead I’d focus in a bit more depth on the film’s defining problem. Overall I wasn’t a massive fan of the movie. Ritchie’s action was incomprehensibly constructed and often relegated to the background, the repeated “but you missed this bit” twists quickly went from cute to aggravating and any moments of flair (the truck scene was pretty cool) were undercut by a pervading obviousness. But these are all just symptoms of a more all-encompassing problem. As you’ll be at least acutely aware, The Man From U.N.C.L.E was originally a TV series made in the sixties. Now there’s an inh...
